children running through

So I am usually behind on things. Not to say that I do not jump on band wagons at the start, but that pretty much is the case. Although Patty Griffin's "Children Running Though" is more than a year old, I have to say I did not purchase it until recently.

Almost 10 years ago I was introduced to Patty Griffin... still behind, I know. I fell in love with a few songs on "Flaming Red," but really did not listen too much to the other songs. Her music was amazing; her songs were something of a miracle to me.

So here I am listening to her latest, wondering how I have not grown more of a love for her in these years. This woman has inspired me. Listening to Trapeze I can feel myself swinging through the air with the "greatest of ease" and wanting to know the feeling to drink in the potion of the Lady of the Snake and "after that [my heart] never ache again."

I hear Burgundy Shoes and can literally visualize a young girl in her "plaid dress" struggling to understand the world around her. As the music eases up and down the piano I can feel chills run up my legs, the drums enter as the mood changes to the brightness of the sun. I want to be there... watching this young spirit ease through the world in mindfulness. I can understand.

Or maybe it's Crying Over that makes me want to move into a honkey-tonk to find some truth. Bring me out of the sorrow of winter into the tears. When the tears come, healing can begin.

Sadness, love, truth and light. For me, this album seeks out answers.
