A few years ago, I ran across a podcast encouraging a shift around the essence of calm. This intrigued me as being calm, peaceful, serene - whatever you want to call it - has been a long-standing goal of mine. The main point I drew from this encounter was instead of saying, "Calm down," try, "Be Calm." To claim the calm, I must shift my thinking as well as how I speak to myself. Calm is more than a desperate cry for something other than insanity or loud. Calm is a change to find that inner ease and reconnect to self.
In regards to our kids, using a BE-statement instead of a declarative "CALM DOWN!" has shifted things pretty powerfully. I set a reminder on my calendar for everyday at noon to "Be Calm." Since I am now home full-time, home schooling and with our children pretty much 24-7, offering this reminder to myself everyday, midday has been so helpful. Something I glaze over it, ignoring its implication. Most days, however, I am sent to a simple place of mindfulness to slow down, take a deep breath, and pick up this elusive calm that I so desire. It only takes a slight shift to entirely change my outlook.
How can you make a conscious effort to embrace a characteristic you long to embody in your daily life?
